Mass Airflow Sensor
2017 Toyota Camry Β· 2.5L I4
Sensor Type
thermistor
Waveform Type
dc-variable
Location
Intake air duct between air filter box and throttle body, passenger side of engine bay
Pins
4-pin connector
Timebase
1s/div for snap throttle test
Voltage Scale
1V/div
Trigger
N/A - DC signal observation
Wiring
Power 12V (pink), Ground (brown), MAF signal output (yellow or light green), Intake air temp signal (white)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0.8V to 1.3V
At Higher RPM
3.5V to 4.8V
Expected Pattern
Smooth DC voltage that increases proportionally with airflow, no oscillations or sudden steps
Known-Good Waveform
Hot-wire MAF sensor output voltage at idle should be 0.9-1.2V with engine fully warmed. During snap throttle test, voltage should smoothly rise to 3.5-4.5V and smoothly return to idle voltage with no hesitation, spikes, or flat spots. Signal should track precisely with airflow changes and return to same idle voltage after acceleration.
Common Failure Patterns
Voltage stuck at 0.2-0.4V or reads above 4.8V at idle
Cause: Contaminated hot-wire element from oil vapors or dirty air filter, MAF sensor failure
Erratic voltage with random spikes or dropouts during steady idle
Cause: Cracked intake air duct allowing turbulent air across sensor or failing MAF sensor electronics
Voltage hesitates or shows flat spot during snap throttle acceleration
Cause: Contaminated MAF sensor element, extremely common on high-mileage 2AR-FE engines
Related DTCs: P0101
Diagnostic Tips
This Denso hot-wire MAF is extremely sensitive to contamination from oiled air filters or PCV system oil vapors. Never use MAF cleaner on this sensor; replace only with OEM part. Verify no air leaks between MAF and throttle body as unmetered air causes lean codes.
