Crankshaft Position Sensor

2018 Toyota Camry Β· 2.5L I4

5V2.5V0V20ms/div | 5V/div2 missing teeth (sync gap)crank-plate
Sensor Type
mre
Waveform Type
crank-plate
Location
Front lower right side of engine block, near crankshaft pulley, monitoring reluctor wheel on crankshaft
Pins
2-pin connector
Idle Frequency
55 Hz
Timebase
20ms/div
Voltage Scale
5V/div
Trigger
0V, rising edge

Wiring

Gray wire (signal positive) and Black wire (signal negative/ground)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0V to 5V
At Higher RPM
-15V to 15V

Expected Pattern

34 teeth with 2 missing on crank angle sensor plate. MRE sensor outputs 0-5V digital signal. Each tooth creates a Hi pulse, missing section creates sync gap for ECU to determine TDC.

Known-Good Waveform

Clean AC sine wave pattern with consistent amplitude showing 34 evenly-spaced pulses followed by a gap where 2 teeth are missing. At idle (650-750 RPM), amplitude should be 4-6V peak-to-peak, increasing proportionally with engine speed. The missing tooth gap should be clearly visible and consistent.

Common Failure Patterns

Erratic amplitude variation, weak or inconsistent voltage peaks, or intermittent dropout of signal
Cause: Excessive air gap between sensor and reluctor wheel due to sensor backing out or debris accumulation on reluctor wheel
Related DTCs: P0335, P0339
No waveform or flat line at all RPM ranges
Cause: Failed sensor winding, broken wire in harness, or corroded connector terminals
Related DTCs: P0335
Signal present but irregular missing tooth pattern or extra noise spikes
Cause: Damaged reluctor wheel teeth or excessive crankshaft end play
Related DTCs: P0335, P0016

Diagnostic Tips

Check sensor resistance (155-195 ohms cold) and verify proper air gap (0.5-1.4mm). These VR sensors are sensitive to contamination on the reluctor wheel; clean thoroughly before replacement. Oil leaks from front main seal can contaminate sensor area.
