Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0V to 35000V
At Higher RPM
0V to 40000V
Expected Pattern
Sharp firing spike to 8-15kV, spark line at 2-4kV for 1-2ms, followed by coil oscillations
Known-Good Waveform
Firing line spikes rapidly to 8-15kV depending on load and mixture, followed by relatively flat spark line at 2-4kV for approximately 1.5-2.0ms duration. After spark terminates, coil oscillations decay smoothly to zero. All six cylinders should show similar firing voltages within 3kV of each other at idle.
Common Failure Patterns
Firing line exceeds 20kV, extended spark duration, irregular spark line
Cause: Worn spark plugs (common at 60k+ miles), excessive plug gap, carbon tracking in coil boot
Diagnostic Tips
2GR-FKS uses iridium plugs with tight gap spec (0.043 inches). Carbon tracking in coil boots is common after 80k miles due to valve cover heat. Always inspect coil boots for white tracking marks when misfires are present.
