Waveform Type
dc-square
Location
Rear of cylinder head on intake camshaft side, valve cover end near timing chain
Pins
3-pin connector
Idle Frequency
27 Hz
Timebase
50ms/div
Voltage Scale
2V/div
Trigger
2.5V, rising edge

Wiring

Brown (12V power supply), Black with White stripe (ground), Blue with Yellow stripe (signal output)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.2V to 4.8V
At Higher RPM
0.2V to 4.8V

Expected Pattern

3 square wave pulses per camshaft revolution with varying width pattern for cylinder identification, running at half crankshaft speed

Known-Good Waveform

Clean digital square wave switching between approximately 0.3V (low) and 4.7V (high) with sharp transitions. Pattern shows three distinct pulses of different widths per revolution for position identification. Frequency should be exactly half of crankshaft sensor frequency, confirming proper timing chain condition.

Common Failure Patterns

Weak signal not reaching full 5V, rounded edges instead of square transitions, or voltage stuck at mid-range (2-3V)
Cause: Failing Hall-effect sensor internal circuitry or low supply voltage to sensor
Related DTCs: P0340, P0365
Signal present but timing correlation error between cam and crank sensors
Cause: Timing chain stretch or jumped timing, common after 150k miles on this engine
Related DTCs: P0016, P0018
Intermittent loss of signal or erratic pulse pattern
Cause: Oil contamination on sensor element from valve cover gasket leak or failed sensor seal
Related DTCs: P0340, P0341

Diagnostic Tips

Verify 12V power and good ground at sensor connector first. This engine uses VVT-i; timing correlation codes often indicate oil control valve issues or timing chain wear rather than sensor failure. Check engine oil level and condition as low/dirty oil affects VVT operation.
