Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0.8V to 1.4V
At Higher RPM
3.2V to 4.5V
Expected Pattern
Smooth DC voltage proportional to airflow, 0.8-1.4V at idle, rising smoothly to 3.2-4.5V at 3000+ RPM
Known-Good Waveform
Hot-wire MAF sensor outputs smooth DC voltage that rises proportionally with airflow. At idle with engine fully warmed, expect 0.8-1.4V (3-7 g/s airflow). During throttle snap from idle to 3000 RPM, voltage should rise smoothly without steps or dropouts to 3.2-4.5V, then decay smoothly on throttle release. No noise or voltage spikes should be present.
Common Failure Patterns
Voltage reading stuck at 0.6-0.9V regardless of throttle, sluggish acceleration
Cause: Contaminated hot wire element from oil vapor or debris, reduced sensor sensitivity
Erratic voltage with spikes or steps during acceleration, unstable idle
Cause: Damaged hot wire element, air leak after MAF sensor, or electrical interference
Diagnostic Tips
Hybrid PCV system can introduce oil contamination to MAF sensor over time; inspect for oil film on hot wire. Verify intake system is completely sealed downstream of MAF. Use MAF cleaner only, never carburetor cleaner which damages sensor element.
