Throttle Position Sensor
2021 Toyota Camry Β· 2.5L I4
Sensor Type
hall-effect
Waveform Type
dc-variable
Location
Integrated into electronic throttle body on intake manifold, non-serviceable separate from throttle body assembly
Pins
6-pin connector
Timebase
500ms/div
Voltage Scale
1V/div
Trigger
N/A - DC voltage monitoring
Wiring
Two 5V reference wires (Gray, Light Green), two signal wires (Dark Blue for TPS1, Yellow for TPS2), two ground wires (Black)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0.65V to 0.85V
At Higher RPM
4.2V to 4.6V
Expected Pattern
Two inverse relationship voltage signals: TPS1 increases from 0.7V to 4.5V as throttle opens, TPS2 decreases from 4.3V to 0.5V simultaneously
Known-Good Waveform
Dual redundant sensors with inverse voltage relationship; at closed throttle TPS1 reads 0.65-0.85V while TPS2 reads 4.0-4.3V. As throttle opens to WOT, TPS1 rises smoothly to 4.2-4.6V while TPS2 drops smoothly to 0.5-0.8V. Voltage change should be perfectly smooth without steps, glitches, or dead spots through entire range.
Common Failure Patterns
One sensor shows flat spot, spike, or dropout during sweep while other sensor remains normal
Cause: Carbon buildup on throttle plate causing binding or internal sensor track wear
Both sensors show erratic jumping or do not maintain inverse correlation
Cause: Failed throttle position sensor assembly or poor connector contact
Diagnostic Tips
This is an electronic throttle control system with no cable. Perform throttle body cleaning with proper Toyota procedure (key on, throttle learning required after cleaning). Monitor both TPS signals simultaneously; sum should remain constant at approximately 5V throughout range.
