Wiring

12V power - pink or white, signal output - yellow or light green, ground - black, IAT sensor - typically orange or blue

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.8V to 1.5V
At Higher RPM
3V to 4.8V

Expected Pattern

Smooth DC voltage that increases proportionally with airflow, idle approximately 1.0-1.3V, gradual rise to 3.5-4.5V at WOT snap throttle

Known-Good Waveform

Smooth, stable DC voltage at idle between 1.0-1.3V with minimal fluctuation (less than 0.05V ripple). During snap throttle test, voltage should rise smoothly and proportionally to approximately 3.5-4.5V, then decay smoothly back to idle without steps, spikes, or dropouts. Response time should be immediate with no lag or hesitation.

Common Failure Patterns

Voltage stuck at 0.2-0.5V or reading above 4.8V regardless of airflow
Cause: Failed MAF sensing element, contaminated hot wire, or open/short in signal circuit
Related DTCs: P0101, P0102, P0103
Voltage shows steps, irregular jumps, or erratic fluctuations during steady idle or acceleration
Cause: Contaminated sensing element from oil vapor or dirt, damaged hot wire element
Related DTCs: P0101, P0171, P0174
Voltage reading appears normal but fuel trims are excessive (>10%)
Cause: MAF sensing element contamination causing inaccurate airflow measurement, intake air leak downstream of MAF
Related DTCs: P0171, P0174, P0101

Diagnostic Tips

Toyota uses hot-wire MAF sensors prone to contamination from oiled aftermarket air filters. Never use MAF cleaner excessively - light cleaning only. Compare MAF voltage to calculated airflow (scan tool g/s reading); idle should be 2.5-4.0 g/s. Verify no intake leaks downstream which cause lean condition without MAF detection.
