Vehicle Speed Sensor
2014 Toyota Corolla Β· 1.8L I4
Sensor Type
hall-effect
Waveform Type
pulse-width
Location
Not present as dedicated sensor - VSS signal derived from ABS wheel speed sensors via ABS ECU, transmitted to ECM over CAN bus
Pins
Unknown
Timebase
2ms/div for CAN observation
Voltage Scale
1V/div
Trigger
2.5V for CAN observation
Wiring
No direct VSS wiring - speed data transmitted digitally via CAN High (Yellow) and CAN Low (Green) between ABS and ECM
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
0V to 0V
At Higher RPM
2.5V to 3.5V
Expected Pattern
CAN bus digital signals at 2.5V (recessive) and 3.5V (dominant) with speed data encoded in messages
Known-Good Waveform
2014-2019 Corolla uses calculated VSS from ABS sensors rather than dedicated transmission speed sensor. Speed data appears on CAN bus as digital messages at 500 kbps. Scan tool should show smooth speed readings matching actual vehicle speed without jumps or zero-out conditions during driving.
Common Failure Patterns
Speedometer reads zero or erratic, odometer not accumulating miles
Cause: Failed ABS wheel speed sensor, CAN bus communication fault, ABS ECU failure
Speed signal present but cruise control inoperative
Cause: CAN communication issue between ABS and ECM, ECM not receiving valid speed data
Diagnostic Tips
Use scan tool to monitor individual wheel speeds and compare to calculated vehicle speed. Check CAN bus termination resistance (should be 60Ξ© across CAN High/Low with ignition off). This generation eliminated the transmission-mounted speed sensor entirely.
