Camshaft Position Sensor

2015 Toyota Corolla Β· 1.8L I4

5V2.6V0.2V50ms/div at idle | 2V/divdc-square
Sensor Type
hall-effect
Waveform Type
dc-square
Location
Mounted on cylinder head front timing cover, driver's side, monitoring the intake camshaft timing gear at 10 o'clock position
Pins
3-pin connector
Idle Frequency
25 Hz
Timebase
50ms/div at idle
Voltage Scale
2V/div
Trigger
2.5V, rising edge

Wiring

Red/Yellow (12V power), White/Black (signal output), Black (ground)

Expected Voltage Range

At Idle
0.2V to 5V
At Higher RPM
0.1V to 5V

Expected Pattern

3 pulses per camshaft revolution (6 pulses per crankshaft revolution) with varying widths - one narrow, one medium, one wide to establish absolute position for VVT-i control

Known-Good Waveform

Clean digital square wave switching between 0.2V (low) and 5.0V (high) with three distinct pulse widths per revolution. The pattern should show consistent timing relationship with crankshaft sensor. During VVT-i operation, the phase relationship between cam and crank signals will shift as cam timing advances or retards, but pulse shape remains constant.

Common Failure Patterns

No signal output, stuck at 0V or 5V constantly
Cause: Hall effect sensor IC failure, often due to oil contamination through timing cover seal entering connector
Related DTCs: P0340, P0365
Intermittent signal dropout or erratic switching between high and low states
Cause: Corroded connector pins from oil ingress or damaged wiring at connector, very common failure point on these engines
Related DTCs: P0340, P0365, P0011
Signal present but ECM sets VVT-i correlation codes
Cause: Signal is good but VVT-i system stuck due to sludge buildup in oil control valve or timing gear, sensor misdiagnosed as faulty
Related DTCs: P0011, P0010, P0016

Diagnostic Tips

Check for oil leaks at timing cover and oil in connector before replacing sensor. Toyota TSB 0094-14 addresses P0016 codes related to VVT-i oil control valve sludge buildup requiring cleaning, not sensor replacement.
