Intake Air Temperature Sensor
2021 Toyota RAV4 · 2.5L I4
Sensor Type
thermistor
Waveform Type
dc-variable
Location
Integrated into MAF sensor body on air intake tube, approximately 8 inches downstream of air filter box
Pins
2-pin connector
Timebase
500ms/div
Voltage Scale
1V/div
Trigger
Not applicable, DC signal
Wiring
Light Blue wire (signal to ECM pin T23), Black/Yellow wire (sensor ground shared with MAF)
Expected Voltage Range
At Idle
1.5V to 3.5V
At Higher RPM
1.2V to 3V
Expected Pattern
Steady DC voltage inversely proportional to intake air temperature, NTC thermistor characteristic
Known-Good Waveform
At ambient temperature of 70°F, voltage should read 2.3-2.7V. Signal should be stable with minimal noise (less than 50mV ripple). During acceleration, voltage may drop slightly due to increased airflow cooling the sensor element, which is normal behavior for the integrated MAF/IAT design.
Common Failure Patterns
Voltage fixed at 4.8-5.0V
Cause: Open circuit in IAT portion of MAF sensor, broken wire in harness connector
Reading -40°F to -30°F constantly (high voltage 4.5V+)
Cause: Failed thermistor element in MAF housing, internal break in sensing element
Related DTCs: P0113
Voltage stuck near 0.1-0.3V showing unrealistic high temperature
Cause: Short to ground in wiring or failed sensor with shorted thermistor
Related DTCs: P0112
Diagnostic Tips
IAT is integrated into MAF sensor on RAV4 2.5L, so MAF contamination can affect IAT readings. Use heat gun to verify voltage drops as temperature increases (should drop approximately 0.2V per 10°F increase). ECM compares IAT to ECT at startup; large deviation triggers P0070.
