⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake
- Turn the ignition to ON position (or press start button without brake if push-button start) to energize the shift lock system
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Attempt to move the shifter from P to N normally; if it moves, you are done
- If the shifter is locked, locate the shift lock override access near the shifter base—look for a small rectangular or round cap on the console trim surrounding the shifter
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the ignition key to carefully pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or a similar tool into the revealed slot and press down on the release mechanism
- While holding the override depressed, move the shifter to N
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the center console shifter, typically on the front or right side of the shifter surround; a small plastic cap covers the override slot and must be removed to access it
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock will remain engaged. Jump-start the vehicle or connect an external 12V power source to restore power to the shift lock system, then use the override procedure. If jump-starting is not possible and the override does not mechanically disengage the shifter, flatbed towing is required.
