🚨 2020 BAIC X35: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 BAIC X35 uses a console-mounted electronic shifter with a shift-by-wire system and a brake-activated shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position (or press start button without brake if push-button start) to energize the shift lock system
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal
  4. Attempt to move the shifter from P to N normally; if it moves, you are done
  5. If the shifter is locked, locate the shift lock override access near the shifter base—look for a small rectangular or round cap on the console trim surrounding the shifter
  6. Use a flathead screwdriver or the ignition key to carefully pry off the override cap
  7. Insert the screwdriver or a similar tool into the revealed slot and press down on the release mechanism
  8. While holding the override depressed, move the shifter to N
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the center console shifter, typically on the front or right side of the shifter surround; a small plastic cap covers the override slot and must be removed to access it
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock will remain engaged. Jump-start the vehicle or connect an external 12V power source to restore power to the shift lock system, then use the override procedure. If jump-starting is not possible and the override does not mechanically disengage the shifter, flatbed towing is required.
