🚨 1999 BMW 525iT E39: Emergency Neutral

The 1999 BMW 525iT E39 uses a traditional mechanical console-mounted automatic transmission shifter with cable linkage and a solenoid-controlled shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position I (accessory) if possible to provide power to the brake lights and shift lock solenoid.
  3. With your foot on the brake pedal, attempt to shift out of Park normally—if the brake light switch has failed but you have battery power, the shift lock may still release.
  4. If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override: remove the small rectangular trim piece or cap at the front of the shifter base (toward the dashboard).
  5. Insert a key, flathead screwdriver, or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down.
  6. While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. The vehicle can now be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.
  8. For towing: E39 vehicles with automatic transmissions can be flat-towed (all wheels down) for very short distances only (under 50 feet at low speed). For any significant distance, use a flatbed or tow dolly with rear wheels off the ground.

With zero electrical power
If the battery is completely dead and you cannot turn the key to accessory position, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. Simply remove the override cap and use the procedure above—the E39's shift lock can be manually overridden without electrical power.
