⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and chock the wheels securely
- Turn the ignition key to position II (accessory/on) if possible - key does not need to start engine
- Depress and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the shifter from P to N - the shift-lock should release with brake pedal depressed and ignition on
- If shift-lock does not release (failed brake light switch or no power), locate the shift-lock override slot on the left side of the shifter assembly
- The override is typically a small covered opening near the base of the shifter on the left side - remove the small plastic cap
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and push down/inward while simultaneously moving the shifter from P to N
- Release the mechanical parking brake lever (located to the left of the shifter)
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the left side of the shifter assembly near the base, typically requiring removal of a plastic cap
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the ignition key will not turn to position II. The shift-lock override must be used mechanically - insert tool into override slot and press while moving shifter to N. The mechanical parking brake operates independently and can be released manually. Vehicle can be rolled or towed with shifter in N and parking brake released.
