🚨 2026 BMW 840i: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 BMW 840i (G15) uses an electronic gear selector lever on the center console with Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive positions.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged if functional.
  2. Locate the shift lock override access—it is a small covered slot on the right side of the shifter base on the center console.
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to carefully pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot.
  4. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed slot and press down firmly.
  5. While holding the override down, move the gear selector from Park to Neutral.
  6. Release the parking brake (if set) and the vehicle can now roll or be loaded.

With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the electronic shifter will not illuminate or provide feedback. The mechanical shift lock override still functions—use the override slot procedure above. If the electronic parking brake is engaged and cannot be released due to no power, the rear wheels may need to be lifted or skid plates used for flatbed loading.
