The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged (if possible)
- Turn the ignition to the ON/Accessory position if battery has any charge remaining (do not need engine running)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the gear selector lever down and hold it in the Drive position for approximately 1-2 seconds to cycle through gears
- Move the selector lever upward briefly to shift into Neutral - the instrument cluster should display 'N'
- If the display shows Neutral, release the brake pedal carefully while someone verifies the vehicle can roll
- If no electrical power: locate the shift lock override - remove the small trim cover on the console directly in front of the gear selector lever (towards the driver)
- Insert a key, screwdriver, or the mechanical key from the key fob into the override slot and press down while moving the selector to Neutral

With completely dead battery, you must use the mechanical shift lock override. The trim cover in front of the shifter pries up to reveal a slot.
