⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure vehicle is secure and parking brake is set if possible
- Press the brake pedal firmly and hold
- If battery has any charge: press the Start/Stop button without pressing the brake to get to accessory mode or ON position
- Move the gear selector lever forward (towards dash) briefly to shift into Neutral position
- Verify 'N' appears on the instrument cluster display
- Release brake pedal carefully and confirm vehicle can roll
- If completely dead battery: locate the shift lock override access
- Remove the small trim cover directly in front of the gear selector base (may be marked with a small tab or seam)
- Insert the mechanical key or small flathead screwdriver into the override slot
- Press down on the override while moving the selector lever forward to Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular trim cover directly in front of the gear selector base on the center console - pry up carefully to access override slot
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, use the mechanical shift lock override slot under the trim cover ahead of the shifter. Press down in the slot while moving selector to Neutral. Note that the electronic parking brake will remain engaged without power and may require mechanical release or flatbed towing. You cannot access transport/tow mode without electrical power.
