⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition to accessory mode (press start button twice without brake pedal) to power up the shifter electronics
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the shifter to neutral position (center detent)
- If the shifter will not release from park electronically, locate the shift lock override slot
- The override slot is beneath a small rectangular cover on the right side of the shifter base (passenger side)
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the small plastic cover
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or the emergency release tool from the toolkit into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously moving the shifter to neutral
- Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully in neutral position

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: the shift lock override is mechanical and will work without power. However, you must manually release the electronic parking brake by removing the rear caliper service cover and using a tool to retract the parking brake motor, or the vehicle cannot roll even in neutral. For towing with dead battery, flatbed is strongly recommended.
