⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
- If any battery charge remains, press the START/STOP button without pressing the brake pedal to activate accessory mode.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Move the gear selector lever forward and hold briefly to engage neutral.
- If the shifter remains locked with power available, check fuse F87 in the luggage compartment fuse box (shift interlock).
- If no electrical power is available, locate the shift lock override cover—a small rectangular cap near the base of the gear selector on the right side of the console.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or the metal key blade to gently pry off the override cap.
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the gear selector forward to neutral.
- Once in neutral, the vehicle can roll; maintain proper chocking before releasing the parking brake.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you must use the mechanical shift lock override: remove the small cap near the shifter base (right side of console), insert a screwdriver or key blade, press down firmly, and move the selector to neutral. The steering will remain locked, so the vehicle cannot be steered and must be transported on a flatbed with all wheels free-rolling.
