The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small rectangular cap or slot near the shifter base
- Remove the small plastic cap (typically located on the right side or front of the shifter console)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously moving the shifter toward Neutral
- The shifter should release and move to Neutral position
