🚨 2026 Chevrolet Bolt EV: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Bolt EV is expected to use a console-mounted electronic shifter, though specific design may vary from previous generation.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chock all wheels before attempting to shift.
- Look for a manual shift lock override slot in the center console area near the shifter base - typically forward or to the side of the shifter.
- If found, use a small flathead screwdriver or key to gently pry off any cover cap.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot.
- While pressing down firmly on the override, attempt to press any release button on the shifter and move it to Neutral.
- If there is NO 12V battery power at all, the override may not function - see 'No Power' notes below.
Shift-lock override location
Likely in center console area near shifter base, but exact location unknown for future model year
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter may not release even with the manual override. Jump-start the 12V battery or connect a portable jump pack to gain enough power to shift to Neutral. The high-voltage traction battery is separate and does not affect shifting.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Bolt EV must be transported on a flatbed truck with all wheels OFF the ground. The electric drive system remains mechanically connected to the wheels in Neutral - towing with any wheels on the ground will cause severe drivetrain damage not covered by warranty. Do not enable Tow Mode expecting wheel-down towing capability.
