🚨 1991 Chevrolet C10: Emergency Neutral
The 1991 C10 uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a cable-operated transmission linkage and a shift lock release button on the shifter handle.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power (this energizes the shift lock solenoid)
- Press the brake pedal firmly while pulling down on the column shifter - if the shift lock releases, move to Neutral
- If the shifter won't move (dead battery or failed brake switch), locate the small shift lock override slot - on most 1988-1991 GMT400 column shifters, look for a small rubber cover or slot near the base of the shifter lever where it enters the steering column
- Remove any rubber cover and insert a small screwdriver or trim tool into the override slot
- Press or push the override mechanism while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and down into Neutral
- If the column shifter is completely jammed, you may need to access the transmission linkage directly under the truck at the transmission - locate the shift cable/linkage on the driver's side of the transmission and manually move the linkage to Neutral position (second detent from the rear)
Shift-lock override location
Small slot or rubber-covered access point at the base of the column shifter lever where it enters the column shroud; exact location varies slightly but typically on the right side of the shifter base
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override slot is your primary method. You'll need to manually press the override while moving the shifter. If this fails, access the transmission shift linkage directly underneath the truck - the shift cable attaches to a lever on the driver's side of the transmission; move this lever to the Neutral position (typically second detent from full rear Park position).
