🚨 1992 Chevrolet C10: Emergency Neutral
The 1992 C10 uses a column-mounted shifter with cable-operated transmission linkage; this year represents the final year for the C10 designation before transitioning to C1500.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power (this energizes the shift lock solenoid)
- Press the brake pedal firmly while pulling down on the column shifter - if the shift lock releases, move to Neutral
- If the shifter won't move (dead battery or failed brake switch), locate the shift lock override - on 1992 GMT400 column shifters, look for a small slot or rubber cover near the base of the shifter lever where it meets the steering column
- Remove any rubber cover and insert a small screwdriver or trim tool into the override slot
- Press the override mechanism inward while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and down into Neutral
- If the column shifter is completely jammed or you cannot locate the override, access the transmission shift linkage underneath the truck - the shift cable attaches to a lever on the driver's side of the transmission; manually move this lever to Neutral (second detent from the rearmost Park position)
Shift-lock override location
Small slot or rubber-covered access near the base of the column shifter lever where it enters the steering column shroud, typically on the right or underside of the shifter base
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, use the shift lock override slot by pressing the release while moving the shifter. If the override is inaccessible or doesn't work, go underneath the truck and manually move the transmission shift lever to Neutral - the shift cable/linkage is on the driver's side of the transmission, and Neutral is the second detent position from full rear (Park).
