🚨 1993 Chevrolet C10: Emergency Neutral

The 1993 C10 uses a column-mounted shifter; note that most 1993 pickups were designated C1500, but any remaining C10 models use the same GMT400 column shifter with cable linkage.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power (this energizes the shift lock solenoid)
  3. Press the brake pedal firmly while pulling down on the column shifter - if the shift lock releases, move to Neutral
  4. If the shifter won't move (dead battery or failed brake switch), locate the shift lock override slot near the base of the shifter lever where it enters the steering column
  5. Look for a small rubber cover or access slot - remove any cover and insert a small screwdriver or trim tool
  6. Press the override mechanism while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and down into Neutral
  7. If you cannot locate the override or it doesn't release the shifter, access the transmission shift linkage from underneath the truck - locate the shift cable attachment on the driver's side of the transmission and manually move the lever to Neutral position (second detent from the rear)
Shift-lock override location
Small slot or rubber-covered access point at the base of the column shifter lever near the steering column shroud; location varies but typically on the right side or underside of the shifter base
With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, use the shift lock override by pressing the release mechanism while moving the shifter. If unsuccessful, access the transmission directly from underneath - the shift cable/linkage is mounted on the driver's side of the transmission; move the lever to Neutral (second detent from full rear Park position).
