🚨 1997 Chevrolet C10: Emergency Neutral

The 1997 C10 uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift lock that engages when the key is in the Off position.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (this releases the mechanical steering column lock on the shifter).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Pull the column shifter lever toward you and move it to Neutral.
  5. If the shifter will not move, verify the key is at least in ACC position—these GMT400 trucks use a mechanical park lock that requires key rotation, not electrical power.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you cannot turn the ignition key to ACC (the steering column lock is mechanical and requires key position). You must either jump-start the vehicle to get accessory power or use a screwdriver to carefully override the column lock mechanism (insert flathead into the column shroud seam near the key cylinder and release the lock pawl). This is a mechanical lock, not electronic, so no shift-lock override button exists.
