⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is fully engaged and wheel chocks are in place
- Turn the ignition key to the ACCESSORY or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock button on the right side of the column shift lever
- Press the brake pedal firmly (if brake light switch is functional)
- Press the shift lock button on the lever and move the shifter down through Reverse to Neutral
- If the shifter will not move due to a failed brake light switch or dead battery, locate the shift lock override slot on the column shroud near the base of the shifter
- Remove the small plastic cover on the underside of the column shroud (you may need to pry gently with a flathead screwdriver)
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and push firmly to release the mechanical lock while simultaneously moving the shift lever to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or winched onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override must be used. The override is purely mechanical and does not require battery power. You may need a flashlight to locate the small cover panel on the underside of the column shroud.
