⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening in the plastic shroud on the right side of the column, just below and behind the shifter lever
- Remove the small plastic cover from the override slot (it may pop out or slide off)
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the slot approximately 1 inch deep
- While holding the tool in the slot, press the brake pedal (even with dead switch, the mechanical override bypasses the interlock)
- Move the shifter to Neutral
- If electrical power is completely absent, you may need to apply firm downward pressure on the tool while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the override slot still functions mechanically. Insert tool into the slot and apply firm downward pressure while pulling the shifter. The ignition does not need to be in any particular position when power is completely dead. You may need to rock the vehicle slightly if the parking pawl is binding under load on an incline.
