The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override access—look for a small cap or cover near the base of the shifter on the left side or front
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a small flathead screwdriver
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no power to brake lights, continue holding override and shift directly to Neutral
- The vehicle can now roll—keep it secured until ready to move
