🚨 2019 Chevrolet Cavalier: Emergency Neutral

The 2019 Cavalier (Mexico market, based on previous-generation Cruze platform) uses a traditional PRNDL console-mounted shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override access—look for a small cap or cover near the base of the shifter on the left side or front
  4. Remove the cap by prying gently with a small flathead screwdriver
  5. Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If no power to brake lights, continue holding override and shift directly to Neutral
  8. The vehicle can now roll—keep it secured until ready to move
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter, typically on the left side or forward edge under a small removable cap; inspect the shifter console base for a small rectangular access point
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical override will still release the shifter lock. You cannot turn the ignition to ACC without battery power, but the override mechanism is purely mechanical and will allow the shifter to move to Neutral. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set before proceeding.
