🚨 1996 Chevrolet Chevy: Emergency Neutral
The 1996 Chevrolet Chevy pickup uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical shift lock that engages when the ignition is off or the brake is not pressed.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (this energizes the shift lock solenoid)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Pull the shift lever toward you and move it to Neutral
- If the shifter will not move with the key on and brake pressed, locate the shift lock override slot on the steering column shroud near the base of the shift lever
- Remove any small plastic cap covering the override slot (typically on the right side of the column near the lever)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key itself into the override slot and press down while pulling the shifter toward you
- Move the shifter to Neutral while holding the override down
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or started (if the battery is charged)
Shift-lock override location
Small slot or hole on the steering column shroud near the base of the shift lever, typically on the right side; may be covered by a small plastic cap
With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, the shift lock is mechanically engaged and the override slot MUST be used. The ignition key cannot be turned without power, but the mechanical override will still release the shifter. You may need to manually unlock the steering wheel by turning it slightly while attempting to use the override. If the column is locked and cannot be manipulated, a jump start or battery replacement will be necessary.
