🚨 2000 Chevrolet Chevy: Emergency Neutral
The 2000 Chevrolet Chevy pickup uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical cable linkage and electronic shift interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock release slot - it is a small rectangular opening on the lower right side of the steering column shroud, near where the shift lever enters the column
- Remove the small plastic cover cap from the release slot if present
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the release slot approximately 1 inch deep
- While pressing the tool inward to depress the override mechanism, press the brake pedal (if you have any electrical power) and pull the shift lever toward you and down into Neutral
- If no power at all, continue holding the override tool depressed and firmly pull the lever - it may require significant force

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock release override should still function mechanically. You may need to use more force on the shift lever while holding the override button depressed. If the steering wheel is locked, you may need to turn the key while wiggling the wheel to unlock the steering column first.
