🚨 1997 Chevrolet K10: Emergency Neutral

The 1997 K10 (C/K series) uses a column-mounted PRNDL shifter with a mechanical shift lock interlock tied to the brake pedal switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Locate the shift lock override—look under the steering column shroud near the base of the shifter lever for a small access hole or slot, typically on the right side of the column.
  3. You may need to remove or partially remove the lower steering column cover (typically held by screws or clips) to access the override mechanism.
  4. Once located, insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot.
  5. Press the tool in to depress the shift lock release mechanism.
  6. While holding the override depressed, pull the column shifter toward you (out of Park) and move it to Neutral.
  7. If the parking pawl is under load, you may need to rock the vehicle slightly or have someone push while you shift.
Shift-lock override location
Under or near the steering column shroud, typically on the right side of the column near the shifter base; may require partial removal of the lower column cover to access.
With zero electrical power
With no power, the shift lock override should still work mechanically since the interlock on this generation is a simple solenoid/plunger system. Access the override slot, depress the release, and shift to Neutral. The mechanical parking brake on this generation can be released normally even without power.
