⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if the battery has any charge
- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override—it is a small covered slot or rectangular opening near the base of the shifter, typically on the left side or front-left area of the shifter assembly
- Use a flathead screwdriver, key, or pen to pry off or push aside any cover cap
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down or push in (depending on design) to release the shift lock
- While holding the override, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral
- Keep your foot on the brake; once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely
Shift-lock override location
Small slot near the shifter base, typically on the left or front-left of the shifter console; exact position may vary slightly by console trim
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the mechanical shift lock override still works. You may not be able to turn the ignition key to ACC if the steering lock is engaged, but the override mechanism itself does not require electrical power. If you need to move the vehicle and the steering is locked, a minimal jump start may be required to unlock the steering column.
