⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge (this may allow normal shifting if only the brake switch failed)
- If ignition won't power on or shift lock won't release, locate the shift lock override slot
- The override slot is a small rectangular opening with a removable cap, located on the driver's side of the shifter base near the button
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or your fingernail
- Insert a flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
- Keep foot on brake pedal during this process even though brake lights may not work

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, you must use the shift lock override slot. The ignition does not need to be in any particular position when using the mechanical override. If the steering column is locked, you may need to jump-start the battery briefly to unlock steering before the vehicle can be moved or steered onto a flatbed.
