🚨 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 Tahoe Hybrid uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with a mechanical shift-lock interlock tied to the brake pedal switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake and chock the wheels
  2. Locate the shift-lock override access—it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cover located on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side
  3. Pry off the plastic cover using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail
  4. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
  5. Press down firmly on the tool while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever to Neutral
  6. If the high-voltage system is active and the vehicle is in 'Ready' mode, the transmission may resist movement—ensure the vehicle is powered down completely before attempting

With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the shift-lock override should still function mechanically. However, the hybrid system's transmission park pawl may remain electronically locked. If the override does not work, connect a jump pack to the 12V battery (under hood) to energize the system briefly, then use the override. If this fails, flatbed with all wheels on the deck.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Tahoe Hybrid uses a two-mode hybrid transmission that can remain electronically locked even when 'off.' Never tow with drive wheels on the ground. Always flatbed or dolly with rear wheels lifted. Do not attempt to shift while the hybrid system is in 'Ready' mode.
