The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if possible (this may provide enough residual power)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular slot covered by a removable cap on the lower right side of the column shroud near the shifter base
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to remove the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you and down into Neutral
- If ignition cannot be turned on at all, the override slot will still mechanically release the shift lock when pressed
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or winched onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift lock override works without any electrical power - simply access the override slot and press down while moving the shifter. You will not be able to turn the steering wheel without power steering, so the vehicle must be winched or pushed straight.
