⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON/ACC position if battery has any charge remaining
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override - look for a small rectangular or square slot with a plastic cap near the base of the shifter console, typically on the left or front side
- Remove the plastic cap carefully (it may be marked with a key symbol)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down or pull up the override (depending on mechanism) while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving to Neutral
- If no power at all, the mechanical override still functions to release the shift lock
- Once in Neutral, vehicle can be pushed or winched onto transport

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is mechanical and will function without electrical power. However, you may need to use more force to move the shifter without power assist. If the electronic parking brake is engaged and cannot be released due to no power, the vehicle will need to be winched onto a flatbed with rear wheels locked.
