⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot—look for a small rubber cap or cover near the base of the shifter, typically on the left side or front face of the shifter housing
- Pry off the cover cap carefully using a flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If the brake pedal feels hard or locked, continue holding the override down and attempt to move the shifter—the override should mechanically release the shift lock even without brake input
Shift-lock override location
Small cap-covered slot near the base of the shifter assembly, typically on the left or forward face of the shifter housing; exact position may vary by trim level
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. You will not be able to turn the ignition to ACC, but the override slot can be accessed and used to release the shifter. The override is a mechanical bypass—no electrical power is required for the release mechanism itself. However, you may need to manually unlock the steering wheel by turning it slightly while attempting to move the key or use the mechanical key override in the door.
