🚨 2023 Citroën C4 X: Emergency Neutral
The 2023 C4 X uses a monostable (spring-return) electronic shifter located on the center console that returns to center position after each gear selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake if functional
- Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine) to power the electronic shifter system
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the shifter rearward briefly to select Neutral - the shifter will spring back to center
- Verify 'N' is displayed on the instrument cluster
- If the brake pedal/shift interlock is failed and prevents shifting, locate the shift lock override access
- The override is typically a small covered slot near the shifter base - remove the cap or cover
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot and press down while moving the shifter to Neutral
- Keep the override depressed until Neutral is confirmed on the display
Shift-lock override location
Small covered access slot near the base of the center console shifter assembly, typically on the right side or front face of the shifter surround
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic monostable shifter will not function. Jump-start the vehicle or connect an external 12V power source to the battery to power the shifter control module. The shift lock override requires at least accessory power to release the transmission park pawl mechanism electronically.
