🚨 2021 Daihatsu Cast: Emergency Neutral

The 2021 Daihatsu Cast uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift-lock tied to the brake pedal and ignition system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake.
  2. If the battery has some charge, turn the ignition to ON (push the start button twice without pressing the brake pedal) to provide power to the shifter mechanism.
  3. Press the brake pedal firmly and attempt to shift from Park to Neutral normally.
  4. If the shift-lock does not release, locate the shift-lock override cover near the shifter base—look for a small rectangular or square cap on the console surrounding the shifter.
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key from the key fob to carefully pry off the override cover.
  6. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while holding the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Near the shifter base on the center console, typically on the left or front side of the shifter, covered by a small removable cap
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you will not be able to use the electronic push-button start. The shift-lock override is mechanical and should still work—locate the override slot, remove the cap, insert a tool, and press down while shifting. The steering lock may engage with no power; you may need to manually turn the steering wheel slightly while attempting to shift. If the steering remains locked, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the wheels off the ground.
