🚨 2021 Daihatsu Cast: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 Daihatsu Cast uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift-lock tied to the brake pedal and ignition system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake.
- If the battery has some charge, turn the ignition to ON (push the start button twice without pressing the brake pedal) to provide power to the shifter mechanism.
- Press the brake pedal firmly and attempt to shift from Park to Neutral normally.
- If the shift-lock does not release, locate the shift-lock override cover near the shifter base—look for a small rectangular or square cap on the console surrounding the shifter.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key from the key fob to carefully pry off the override cover.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while holding the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Near the shifter base on the center console, typically on the left or front side of the shifter, covered by a small removable cap
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you will not be able to use the electronic push-button start. The shift-lock override is mechanical and should still work—locate the override slot, remove the cap, insert a tool, and press down while shifting. The steering lock may engage with no power; you may need to manually turn the steering wheel slightly while attempting to shift. If the steering remains locked, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the wheels off the ground.
