The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is typically a small covered opening near the base of the shifter on the right side or front.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove the small cover cap over the override slot.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to N.
- If brake cannot be pressed, keep override pressed and carefully shift to N - you may need to rock the shifter slightly.
- Replace the override cover cap after shifting to neutral.
