🚨 2009 Daihatsu Esse: Emergency Neutral

The 2009 Daihatsu Esse uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a mechanical shift-lock mechanism typical of Japanese kei cars from this era.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (this may allow normal brake-pedal shift release).
  3. If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift-lock override cover—typically a small rectangular or round cap near the base of the shifter console, often on the right side or front edge.
  4. Use a flat-head screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or a key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward Neutral.
  6. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
The shift-lock override is mechanical and does not require battery power. However, without power you cannot turn the ignition to ACC, so simply use the override release directly. Steering will be locked unless you can turn the key to ACC manually.
