🚨 2015 Daihatsu Hijet: Emergency Neutral

The 2015 Hijet pickup uses a traditional column-mounted shifter for automatic transmissions, typical of Japanese commercial kei trucks.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any remaining charge
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - look for a small rubber cap or cover near the base of the shifter on the column
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cover
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you into Neutral
  6. If no electrical power is available, the mechanical override should still function - maintain pressure on the override while moving the shifter
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the base of the column shifter assembly, typically on the right side facing the driver
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override is purely mechanical and should still function. The key must be in the ignition cylinder (turned to ACC if possible, but physical key presence may be enough). Apply firm pressure to the override mechanism while shifting.
