🚨 2016 Daihatsu Move: Emergency Neutral

The 2016 Move (sixth generation, LA150S/LA160S) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any remaining charge
  3. Press the brake pedal firmly (if electrical power is available, this may release the shift lock normally)
  4. Locate the shift lock override cover - a small rectangular cap on the console near the shifter base, typically on the left side or front of the shifter
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver or the physical key to pry off the override cover carefully
  6. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While maintaining pressure on the override, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cap near the base of the floor shifter console, usually on the left side or forward of the shifter gate
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the key must be physically present in the ignition (turn to ACC position if the steering lock allows). The mechanical shift lock override should function without electrical power - press firmly into the override slot while operating the shifter button and moving to Neutral. Some resistance is normal.
