🚨 2018 Daihatsu Move: Emergency Neutral

The 2018 Daihatsu Move uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock in the P position.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if possible (provides 12V power to release shift lock normally).
  3. If the brake-light switch has failed but you have battery power, pressing the brake pedal while turning the key to ON should release the shift lock.
  4. If you have no power or the shift lock will not release electrically, locate the shift lock override slot—typically a small rectangular slot or cap near the base of the shifter console, often on the left or right side.
  5. Remove the cap or cover using a flathead screwdriver or similar tool.
  6. Insert a screwdriver, key, or the override tool (if provided in the vehicle toolkit) into the override slot and press down firmly.
  7. While holding the override down, move the shifter from P to N.
  8. Remove the tool and reinstall any cap removed.
  9. The vehicle can now be pushed or winched onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot or removable cap near the base of the shifter console, typically on the left or right side of the shifter—check both sides if not immediately visible.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override must be used. The ignition key may not turn without battery power; if the steering lock engages, the vehicle must be towed in P with appropriate equipment (dollies or flatbed recommended). The override allows shifting to N for easier flatbed loading.
