The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if possible (provides 12V power to release shift lock normally).
- If the brake-light switch has failed but you have battery power, pressing the brake pedal while turning the key to ON should release the shift lock.
- If you have no power or the shift lock will not release electrically, locate the shift lock override slot—typically a small rectangular slot or cap near the base of the shifter console, often on the left or right side.
- Remove the cap or cover using a flathead screwdriver or similar tool.
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or the override tool (if provided in the vehicle toolkit) into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from P to N.
- Remove the tool and reinstall any cap removed.
- The vehicle can now be pushed or winched onto a flatbed.
