🚨 2011 Dodge Ram 3500: Emergency Neutral

The 2011 Ram 3500 uses a column-mounted PRNDL shifter with a brake-interlock system that prevents shifting out of Park without brake application.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is set and wheels are chocked
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if any battery power remains
  3. Locate the shift interlock override access: on the steering column shroud, find the small plastic cap on the right side near the shifter base
  4. Remove the override access cap (pull straight out or use a small flat tool to pry gently)
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, trim stick, or similar rigid tool into the override slot
  6. Press the tool firmly into the slot (approximately 1/2 inch depth) while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal and moving the shifter to Neutral
  7. With no battery power: the override is mechanical—press the tool in firmly and shift without needing brake electrical function
  8. Once in Neutral, vehicle can roll freely; for towing, use flatbed or ensure proper driveline configuration (2WD can tow with rear wheels up; 4WD requires all wheels off ground or flatbed)
Shift-lock override location
Small capped slot on the right side of the steering column shroud, adjacent to the shifter lever base
With zero electrical power
The interlock override is fully mechanical. Insert the override tool into the access slot, apply firm inward pressure, and shift to Neutral. No electrical power is required for this emergency release.
