The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is set and wheels are chocked
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if any battery power remains
- Locate the shift interlock override access: on the steering column shroud, find the small plastic cap on the right side near the shifter base
- Remove the override access cap (pull straight out or use a small flat tool to pry gently)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, trim stick, or similar rigid tool into the override slot
- Press the tool firmly into the slot (approximately 1/2 inch depth) while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal and moving the shifter to Neutral
- With no battery power: the override is mechanical—press the tool in firmly and shift without needing brake electrical function
- Once in Neutral, vehicle can roll freely; for towing, use flatbed or ensure proper driveline configuration (2WD can tow with rear wheels up; 4WD requires all wheels off ground or flatbed)
