The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn ignition to ACC or ON if battery has any remaining charge
- Locate the shift interlock override: look for a small plastic cap on the right side of the steering column shroud, near where the shifter lever enters the column
- Remove the cap by pulling it straight out (it may be friction-fit or have a small tab)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool into the exposed override slot
- Press the tool firmly into the slot (depth approximately 1/2 inch) to depress the mechanical release
- While holding the override tool in place, press the brake pedal and move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If completely dead battery: the override mechanism is mechanical and will work without power—maintain pressure on the tool and shift to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the truck can be rolled or winched; for towing, use appropriate method for drivetrain (flatbed recommended for 4WD)
