🚨 1990 Dodge Ram 50: Emergency Neutral

The 1990 Ram 50 uses a traditional floor-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical shift lock button on the side of the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged.
  2. Locate the shift lock override slot - it's typically a small rectangular opening on the right side of the shifter base assembly, often covered by a small plastic cap.
  3. Remove the plastic cap if present by prying gently with a small flathead screwdriver.
  4. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot (approximately 1-2 inches deep).
  5. While pressing down firmly on the override release mechanism, press the shifter button and move the shifter toward Neutral.
  6. You should feel mechanical resistance release as you press the override.
  7. Move the shifter to Neutral and verify it's engaged before releasing the override.

With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the shift lock override is purely mechanical and will still function. The override bypasses the electrical brake-light switch interlock. You may need to press harder on the override as there's no solenoid assistance. The shifter button on the handle itself is purely mechanical and doesn't require power.
