The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake (if functional).
- If the battery has any charge, turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Locate the shift-lock override slot—it is a small covered opening near the base of the shifter assembly on the console.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot.
