⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if the battery has any charge (this may release the shift lock automatically).
- If the shift lock does not release, locate the shift-lock override slot on the right side of the shifter base, adjacent to the shift button.
- Remove the small rubber cap or plastic cover from the override slot using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
- Remove the tool and replace the cover cap.
- The vehicle can now be moved or towed.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you cannot turn the ignition key to release the shift lock electrically. You must use the manual shift-lock override slot. No battery power is required to use the mechanical override—simply access the override slot and follow the procedure above.
