⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to the ON or ACC position if 12V power is available (turn key to ON position).
- Locate the shift lock override: look for a small removable cap or slot near the base of the shifter assembly, typically on the left or front side of the shifter base.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove the cap if present.
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override mechanism down, press the brake pedal (if power is available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the shifter resists, maintain pressure on the override and gently rock the shifter until it releases into Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, release the override and replace the cap if removed.
Shift-lock override location
Check the left side or front of the shifter base for a small cap or rectangular slot; exact location may vary by trim or production batch.
With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the electronic shift lock will not release. Use the mechanical shift lock override by accessing the override slot and pressing down while manipulating the shifter. Turn the key to ACC or ON if possible to reduce steering lock resistance when moving the vehicle. If the battery is completely dead, the override slot is your only option to release the shifter mechanically.
