🚨 2022 Honda Step WGN: Emergency Neutral
The 2022 Honda Step WGN (sixth generation, RP series) hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shifter lever similar to other Honda hybrid systems with shift-by-wire technology.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to ON (II) position if 12V power is available - press the START button twice without pressing the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override - look for a small removable cap near the base of the shifter assembly on the console, typically on the left or front side of the shifter
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or the mechanical key to pry off the shift lock override cover
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to the N (Neutral) position
- The shifter should now move freely to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be carefully rolled or winched onto a flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Small removable cap near the shifter base on the center console; check the left side or front edge of the shifter housing first
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the hybrid system and electronic shifter are inoperative. Use the mechanical shift lock override to release the shifter. If the override does not successfully engage with zero power, or if the electronic shifter mechanism remains locked, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels lifted or using dollies - do not attempt to force the shifter.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL WARNING: The Step WGN hybrid must be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. DO NOT tow with any wheels touching the ground - the hybrid transaxle has electric motors mechanically coupled to the drive wheels, and wheel rotation will generate voltage that can damage the hybrid system and create electrical hazards. If you must roll the vehicle for positioning during loading, keep distance minimal (under 50 feet at walking speed).
